So, after spending a quarter of a year here in California, i have some new stories and pictures to share with my beloved friends and family!
I cannot be happier here in Oceano, California. This truly is the last paradise. Even my new friend BIG Jim (who is a traveler sign maker from Washington) says that this is the only area in California which is on the beach, and very underdeveloped. My neighbor Hollywood Bill (from across the hall) drive 4 hours from Hollywood to spend a few weeks here because it is so lovely.
It is know as the "stairway to heaven" because of the harmonious combination of clouds, mountains and ocean. Every day is sunny, 70-80 degrees with no humidity (for you LI folks, i know your all sweating it out now with the humidity!) Every morning you wake up and feel like your on vacation from the world.
Some days there are clouds of fog that drift over the ocean. You can barely make out surfers enjoying the waves, with the backdrop of pelicans diving into the water for dinner. What makes this area even more unique and exciting is that it is the only State beach in California to offer vehicle privileges to drive anywhere on the beach, including the sacred dunes (yes, in LI you cant even look at the dunes, here you can race monster trucks on them.)
What i find ironic is how there are so many monster trucks here, much more than upstate NY during a a winter blizzard! Big rigs that could pull a building, and some of them do. The campers and RV's and toy trailers are everywhere. Guys come from all over the country to ride their ATVs, quads, dirt bikes, custom dune buggies and even trucks in the dunes-see pictures below and you will see what i mean!
I couldn't understand the big deal about these dunes. I hadn't seen them, but i assumed they were like the dunes on LI. I was wrong. Hollywood Bill invited me out to drive his machines on the dunes, and i got a firsthand taste of the action. ANYTHING goes on the dunes. Its this isolated area where police cant even access. They have special ambulances and tow trucks that are made specifically to access these dunes. I always wondered why i heard ambulances driving up and down the beach all day, its because the dunes are a free for all!
You have the massive (dozens of miles long and wide) stretch of sand hills that looks like a desert. You have monster trucks, campers, machines of all kinds, booze and bombs. After following Hollywood Bill down the coast (i got soaking wet on the ATV, as i was driving through the ocean) we accessed the path that leads into the heart of the dunes. What i saw next was unbelievable. You have trucks lined up 4 in a row racing up these mountains of sand. You have ATVs and dirt bikes driving like maniacs all over the place, and then you see people camping. Bombs going off, trucks getting sucked into the sand, what more could you ask for?
I've located a 24hour private members only gym, I've got my friend BIG Jim joining me at the gym, and i am about 5 minutes away from a tremendous health food store! The ocean is 50 steps from my apartment, and i have a sweet view of the beach from my patio.
I've witnessed it all. I've seen monster trucks pull out trucks that were trailing huge RV's, I've seen cars get engulfed by the ocean, sea lions dancing on the beach and whales migrating down to Mexico. Enjoy the pictures, and i hope you come out and visit!
